The Power of a Capability Statement

About the Commission-Funded Capability Statement Project

The Peel Development Commission funded a pilot program delivered by IPS Management Consultants to help eight local businesses in the Peel region create professional capability statements. Each business received tailored, one-on-one support to develop a statement that showcases their strengths, services, and readiness for new opportunities—including tenders and grant applications. The project aimed to boost the competitiveness of local businesses, making it easier for them to apply for government and private sector work, and setting a foundation for future growth.

Local Business Spotlight #2 – Pontoon Boat Tours

Ever wondered how a formal capability statement could transform your business? We spoke with local business owner Tracy Uchtman from Pontoon Boat Tours who shared their experience—from developing a new marketing strategy, to updating their website and having a much clearer direction for who they are.

They revealed that the process of developing a Capability Statement was invaluable. As a new start up business the ideas are in abundance! The process enabled them to clearly determine who they are, what services they would like to offer and what sets them apart.

In relation to their experience developing a capability statement, they said, “It’s easy to get lost in trying to offer a multitude of services when you are customer focused. The process of developing the Capability Statement coached us to consider who we are and refine what services we have to offer.”

Interview Q&A

  • How has having a formal capability statement impacted your business so far?
We recently used the statement to engage a digital marketing specialist and have embarked on an exciting marketing campaign. The statement was one tool used by designers to develop our marketing strategy. The process of building the statement was of enormous benefit to us. It gave us a very clear outline of who we are, the direction we would like to take our business and what sets us apart from our competitors. This has directly impacted how we will market our business.
  • Has the capability statement opened doors to new clients, partnerships, or contracts?
This is our second year in operation. We are having modifications made to our website in November and will add the Capability Statement. Measurements can be gained by increased interest, especially by our target audience as well as repeat business. We have explored grants where we will use the statement.
  • How do you plan to use the capability statement?
Website and digital traffic, grant applications, award nominations.
  • What advice would you give to other small businesses considering investing in a capability statement?
The process for us was invaluable. As a new start up business the ideas are in abundance! This process enabled us to clearly determine who we are, what services we would like to offer and what sets us apart. It’s easy to get lost in trying to offer a multitude of services when you are customer focused. The process of developing the Capability Statement coached us to consider who we are and refine what services we have to offer. This was an unexpected and terrific bonus for us, at this early stage of business.
  • Do you have any upcoming opportunities where the capability statement will be a key asset?
Yes, upgrading our website, grant applications and hopefully business award nominations this year!
  • How has this funded statement by the Commission changed how you see your business’s potential or future? If so how?
This opportunity has given us relevance and currency in our industry.  Despite many years operating small businesses, we were unaware of the significance of having a Capability Statement. With an ever-increasing digital market, the statement is a simple and vibrant way to showcase our business, and we see it as another tool in our toolbox of marketing.
  • Were there any challenges you faced while developing your capability statement?
Again, the process of developing the statement gave us clearer direction for who we are. If the statement was not funded, and we had not been made aware, our business simply would not have one. Communication by the Peel Development Commission is the singular reason we have the statement and has a direct impact on our future in business.
