The Power of a Capability Statement

About the Commission-Funded Capability Statement Project

The Peel Development Commission funded a pilot program delivered by IPS Management Consultants to help eight local businesses in the Peel region create professional capability statements. Each business received tailored, one-on-one support to develop a statement that showcases their strengths, services, and readiness for new opportunities—including tenders and grant applications. The project aimed to boost the competitiveness of local businesses, making it easier for them to apply for government and private sector work, and setting a foundation for future growth.

Local Business Spotlight #1 – Expedition Systems

Ever wondered how a formal capability statement could transform your business? We spoke with local business owner Jason Patzak from Expedition Systems who shared his experience—from opening doors to new clients and B2B opportunities, to presenting a more professional image in tenders and grant applications.

He revealed that, while it’s still early days, having a capability statement has made a real difference in promoting their services and building credibility. It’s now a key asset in upcoming tenders and has changed how they see their business’s potential and future.

In fact, Expedition Systems were successful in being awarded a $20k grant in the Local Capability Fund (LCF) round 8 for 2025-26, which the Commission’s Local Content Adviser advised them on.

In relation to capability statements, his advice for other small businesses? “The sooner you get started, the easier it is. Once you have your capability statement, you can continue to develop and update it as your business grows.”

Interview Q&A

  • How has having a formal capability statement impacted your business so far?
While it is still early days, we have been able to present our capability statement to other businesses and government agencies as a part of our initial intro while seeking new business opportunities.
  • Has the capability statement opened doors to new clients, partnerships, or contracts?
The capability statement has been great in promoting our business on a more professional footing. We are currently in talks regarding several B2B sales. I believe that being able to present such a professional capability statement shows our commitment to quality and will be of huge benefit.
  • How do you plan to use the capability statement?
We are using the capability statement to introduce ourselves, providing the first contact with a high level view of our services. It will also be used in grant applications and government tender applications.
  • What advice would you give to other small businesses considering investing in a capability statement?
The sooner you get started, the easier it is. Once you have your capability statement you can continue to develop and update it as your business grows.
  • Do you have any upcoming opportunities where the capability statement will be a key asset?
Yes, it will be a key feature in a tender we are working on.
  • How has this funded statement by the Commission changed how you see your business’s potential or future? If so how?
It brings with it a new level of professionalism to our company, enabling easier transmission of our mission and goals. I didn’t see the purpose to begin with but now that we have the capability statement, I wish we had it sooner.
  • Were there any challenges you faced while developing your capability statement?
No, the team were great and prompted us when needed, allowing for a far better outcome.
