Bindjareb Local Geopark, Trail Guide & Mobile App Launched
The Bindjareb Geopark, Trail Guide and Mobile App have been officially launched, celebrating the Peel region’s unique geology, deep cultural heritage and exceptional natural environment.
Developed by Geoparks WA with support from the Peel Development Commission and other key stakeholders, the new Trail Guide and Mobile App provide an engaging way for locals and visitors to explore the Geopark and key sites of geological, flora, fauna and cultural heritage across the Peel region.
Showcasing internationally significant wetlands, waterways, landforms including our jewel in the crown – the Lake Clifton Thrombolites – and Bindjareb Noongar knowledge, the Trail Guide and Mobile App tell the story of Country through geology, culture and environment, helping people better understand what makes this region truly special.
The Peel Development Commission acknowledges Dr Yifei Ren for generously contributing his technical expertise on a voluntary basis to the development of the Bindjareb Geopark mobile app.
The launch represents another important step forward in establishing geoparks in Western Australia and progressing the Peel region along the pathway towards UNESCO Global Geopark designation.
In 2021, the Peel Development Commission established the Peel Aspiring Geopark Working Group, supported by Geoparks WA, the Australian Geoparks Network, Salt and Bush Eco Tours, Visit Mandurah, the City of Mandurah, the Shires of Murray and Waroona, Dr Kelvin Matthews and several Bindjareb Traditional Custodians.
With funding from the Peel Development Commission, Sebastian Jones, a local geologist and owner of Salt and Bush Eco Tours, assessed approximately 30 sites across the Peel region for their alignment with UNESCO Global Geoparks criteria, including significant abiotic (geology and landforms), biotic (flora and fauna) and cultural heritage values.
This work led to the successful launch of the Peel Geodrive Trail in 2024, supported by $26,500 in funding from the Commission to Geoparks WA. The trail includes 12 key sites and was the first of its kind in the region.
The further development of the Bindjareb Geopark Trail Guide and Mobile App recognises the close connection between geology, environment and culture, while supporting education, environmental conservation, sustainable tourism and regional development.
Comments attributed to Minister for Peel Jessica Stojkovski MLA:
“It was my pleasure to be on Bindjareb Country today to officially launch the Bindjareb Local Geopark, Trail Guide & Mobile App, celebrating the region’s unique geology, culture and natural environment.
The Trail Guide and mobile app have been designed to make the Bindjareb Geopark more accessible to locals and visitors, providing clear and engaging information about key geosites, landscapes and stories across the region.
Importantly, the Bindjareb Geopark forms part of a bigger picture for eco‑tourism development in the region, complementing the Cook Labor Government’s major $2 million election commitment to support Stage 1 activation of Yalgorup National Park. This reflects our commitments to protecting the environment, strengthening and diversifying our regional economies, and building inclusive, connected communities.”
Comments attributed to Peel Development Commission Chair Myri Riddy:
“The Peel Development Commission is committed to supporting tourism investment in the region and building a network of diverse adventures which attracts visitors, fosters economic growth and encourages environmental sustainability.
The Bindjareb Geopark project and development of the Trail Guide & Mobile App demonstrate how strong strategic partnerships between Traditional Owners, community, tourism organisations and government can help build a regenerative visitor economy that celebrates Country, protects the environment and delivers long-term benefits for the Peel region.”
Comments attributed to Geoparks WA Vice President, Professor Ross Dowling
“Globally, geotourism and Geoparks continue to grow as visitors seek deeper understanding of the places they visit. The Bindjareb Geopark is well placed to meet this demand.
The launch of the Trail Guide and mobile app represents another important step forward in establishing geoparks in Western Australia, and we greatly value the partnership with the Peel Development Commission and all Geopark working group members who have helped deliver both the Peel Geodrive Trail and the Bindjareb Geopark Trail Guide & Mobile App.”
