Exciting Business Opportunities

In recent years the Peel Region has experienced substantial economic growth and is currently acknowledged as Western Australia's fastest growing Region.

Major development opportunities are already in progress. They include the development of the Mandurah Ocean Marina precinct, transport infrastructure, the revitalisation of inland towns and districts, and a variety of resort developments, major residential canal areas and residential golfing estates.

Some of the Region's major competitive advantages are its close proximity to the metropolitan area, strong telecommunications infrastructure, availability of greenfields sites and its low competitive cost structures. Prices for goods and services are equivalent to the Perth metropolitan area.

Agriculture:
Primary agricultural production is a key economic activity for much of the Region. The surrounding Shires hold good farming land producing vegetables, beef cattle, dairy products, poultry, sheep and a variety of other crops such as fruit, olives, wine and table grapes. The Region is recognised as one of the most intensive horse activity areas in Australia.

Opportunities for export and processing of goods, such as wine, olives, poultry, fruit, vegetables and flowers are expanding.

Manufacturing:
There are many manufacturing establishments in the Region producing fabricated metal products, wood products, food and beverage, transport equipment and printing.

The Peel Development Commission is working with State and Local Government partners to increase the availability of industrial land in the Peel Region. The availability of land within the Perth metropolitan area is becoming increasingly limited for industrial requirements. The Peel Region, with its access to ports, roads, rail and international airport facilities and available sites, holds considerable potential to attract new industry.

Mining:
Mining and mineral processing are the most important economic activities in the Region. The largest employer in the region is ALCOA - World Alumina - providing feedstock for the production of 20% of the world's alumina.

The decision to re-open the Boddington Gold Mine will create local and regional development with employment, training and business opportunities targeted to local people and businesses.

Companies providing mining support services can take advantage of opportunities to provide goods and services currently being supplied from outside the Region.

Retail:
The Peel Region has a broad range of retail facilities ranging from local community shopping to Mandurah's retail strip. There are hundreds of speciality outlets and services with opportunities for many more as the population of the Region grows.

Tourism:
Tourism is a growth area with almost unlimited potential. As the number of tourists looking for something different increase, so do the opportunities for the Peel Region. Mandurah and the surrounding Shires of Boddington, Murray, Serpentine Jarrahdale and Waroona are ideally placed to attract both day trippers from Perth and overnight visitors.
The Region has much to offer visitors including a variety of different festivals, international quality golf courses, a fine wood centre, crabbing in the Peel Inlet, country retreats, rodeos and eco-tourism based activities like bushwalking, horse treks and more than 70 kilometres of accessible coastline.
